About Little Wandle Phonics Scheme

Children take part in at least one phonics lesson each day and also a Book Club session where teaching staff listen to every child read daily. Our Book Club sessions also incorporate reading comprehension questions from the five skills (Retrieval, Inference, Vocabulary, Prediction and Sequencing).

Children who find the comprehension questions challenging, will remain in a group where answers are accepted verbally whereas children who are more advanced in how to answer comprehension skills in a variety of ways, get challenged by writing the answers as they would in the SATS papers.

We use the Collins Big Cat Phonics reading books to support the correct phonics phase.

Children are taught in their classes or year group and take part in daily catch-up sessions when needed.

The children take home a phonetically decodable book which is closely matched to the phonics phase and set that they have been assessed in.

In addition, the children also take home a reading book of their choice and have an authentic library experience every other week.

We offer parent information evenings about phonics.
